Adam Bannister, Psychodynamic Psychotherapist

I'm Adam, a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist based in Brighton & Hove. I work with adults across a range of difficulties and life stages, in both short and long-term therapy. I'm drawn to psychodynamic work because it goes beneath the surface, exploring how past experiences and relationships continue to shape how we think, feel and function today.

I'm here to help you explore what's currently happening and why. In our work together, you'll have a space where you don't need to perform or pretend, where you can be honest about what's really going on. We'll look at what brings you to therapy, the thoughts, feelings and patterns that keep coming up, and work to understand what they might be telling you. This kind of work takes time and commitment, but it can lead to meaningful, lasting change.

Training, Qualifications & Experience

  • Masters in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy, Birkbeck, University of London
  • Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

People come to therapy for many different reasons. Some of the things I most commonly work with include:

Anxiety

Including panic attacks, social anxiety, or persistent unease

Depression

Low mood, stuckness, loss of meaning or purpose

Disconnection

Feeling cut off from yourself or from others

Relationship patterns

Repeated breakdowns, fear of intimacy, conflict avoidance

Trauma

Whether recent or historic, including painful family patterns

Self-esteem

A sense that something is fundamentally wrong with you

Chronic feelings

Such as shame, guilt, anger, loneliness

Bereavement & loss

Grief, loss of identity, or difficult life transitions

Men's issues

Identity, relationships, and the pressure to cope alone

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a talking therapy that focuses on the deeper roots of what you're experiencing. Sessions are open and conversational, following what feels most relevant or pressing for you, rather than working to a fixed agenda. Over time, patterns and connections begin to emerge that can shift the way you understand and relate to yourself and others.

Here's how we'd typically work together:

A free phone call

I offer a free 15-minute phone call where we can have a chat about what's going on for you. There's no obligation to proceed.

Initial consultation

If we decide to work together, our first session is an initial consultation where I'll take time to get to know you and understand what's bringing you to therapy.

Ongoing therapy

From there, we move into weekly 50-minute sessions. Therapy works best with consistency and commitment, so I'd encourage attending weekly where possible.

A few things that might be useful to know:

Location

I work in person in comfortable therapy rooms in Brighton & Hove, and online via Zoom.

Sessions are 50 minutes and take place weekly at the same time each week.
